August’s Featured Young Artist:
Chintia Kirana
SAC’s would like to encourage artists of all ages to explore their interests and talents. This section of our Web Gallery is devoted to the young artist, between the ages of 8 and 21. We are, by nature, a visual arts organization, but if your talent is in one of the other arts then don’t hesitate to ask about how to be included in this Gallery. We are attempting to add one young artist a month and will leave the artist’s information up for a year. If you would like to be included in this section please contact Ladonna at ladonna@atouchofglass.net. Please include “SAC’s Young Artist Gallery” in the subject line. |

I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. I immigrated to the United States when I was 12 or 13, because of the Indonesian chaos in 1998. The Muslim Indonesians were killing Chinese Indonesians. Thousands of Chinese Indonesians lost their businesses because their property was burned or stolen. Fearing for our lives, we decided to leave the country—at least for now. Living in America takes time to get used to. I faced many challenges, especially the language barrier. I graduated in 2005 from Booker T. Washington Magnet High School with visual arts as my magnet. I am a senior at Auburn University Montgomery with the emphasis in painting. |

Drawing has been my hobby ever since I received my first crayon set from my parents as kid. I started out drawing ads from packages and cartoons. Disney characters were my favorite cartoons to draw. I did not get any formal training until I reached high school. My instructor Rachel Dudley trained me in observational drawings. I think this is the most important step in learning how to draw. My professor in college, Richard Mills, once said that to be able to be a good abstract artist, you have to be a good observational artist.

I try to expand my artistic studies with different mediums other than graphite and oils. I also use watercolor, ink, colored pencils, conté crayons, charcoal, pastels, and acrylics. I enjoyed doing ceramics and sculpture. My subject matter includes landscapes, still life, portraits, architecture, and pets. In my spare time, I do commissioned works for people. “Buster” is one of the commission works I did in colored pencils. I did a couple of solo shows at the Armory Learning Arts Center in Montgomery. Some of my works are in the Missing Piece Gallery and Furniture store. I plan to attend Graduate School and at some point in my life, I would like to be an art teacher because I believe art is a talent that we should share with the community.
